|| the||apiary ||
the||apiary (noun: a place where bees are kept; a collection of beehives) is an electro-acoustic experimental ambient duo playing viola and electronics. Through field recording, structured improvisation and poetry, they create complex, textural, living environments; they get lost and find new paths to strange places. In the||apiary, there is space to listen, reflect and be taken somewhere else; an organic softness that may embrace an ear; whisper things in long-forgotten languages.
MARIKE KNEGTERING [she/her] is a 25 year old violinist, violist and biologist from Amsterdam. She graduated with a bachelor's Beta-gamma and Biology at the University of Amsterdam in 2021. Now she studies Jazz & Pop violin at the HKU Conservatory. She investigates many more genres outside jazz and pop: she plays gypsy violin in the band Reci Da!, violin in post-modern fusion group DUMIKA, viola in the classical Euphonious Ensemble (piano quintet), violin in Arabic fusion band Honeydew, and viola in the||apiary. In the||apiary her musicality and fascination for nature come together with the EP ecological||succession. Playing in the||apiary is a way for her to find and stretch the limits of musically meaningful sounds on her viola.
LINKS TO SOCIALS
CHRISTIAN JOHANNES [he/him] is a Dutch/Surinamese composer, producer and performer based in Amsterdam. He is currently studying cultural musicology at the University of Amsterdam and composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He is interested in the intersection between the organic and the digital. Through field recordings, sampling and modular synthesis, he works to sculpt sonic environments: places in which music may transpire, where the archaic and the post-modern find fields on which they can talk to each other in strange tongues. What does it mean to liberate a sound? For him, making noise can be a kind of activism, giving voices to those beings that we have rendered voiceless.

In January 2024 the||apiary is presenting their first studio EP: ecological||succesion. In this work, they meditate on the ecological concept of succession, whereby ecosystems change from barren environments to ones brimming with sonic activity. They attempt to construct a world using strings, synthesis, field recordings and poetry and weaving it together using structured improvisation.
"We want to develop this EP to give a voice to our environment; to make the landscape sing. Given the situation we are in as a species (the rapid destruction of our natural world), it is of vital importance that we learn to listen to the things around us, and the beings surrounding us. This EP is an attempt at doing so."
